Where are the Players from Last Season’s BRYC 15’s Girls National Team?
Last year, we coached the BRYC Girls 15 National Team with a roster of 10 players. All of last year’s players were 9th graders (rising sophomores). Eight of those players are playing for their high school varsity teams. One player’s high school does not have a volleyball team and one player chose not to tryout for high school volleyball this season. We also had a “practice player”, Emory Mondschein, who practiced and scrimmaged with us, but did not participate in competitions. Emory is currently a starter on Woodson High School’s JV volleyball team. Here is a list of where the players are competing during this high school season:
Lexi Carlisle Varsity @ Chantilly High School
Kari Coleman No volleyball team at Kari’s high school
Brenna Gannon Varsity @ Woodson High School
Merriweather Gordon Varsity @ George Mason High School
Sara Khatouri Varsity @ West Springfield High School
Cassidy Ragunas Varsity @ South County High School
Lindsay Rogers Varsity @ Centreville High School
Tara Scholberg Chose not to tryout for volleyball this fall
Rachel Stephens Varsity @ West Springfield High School
Sydney Trotto Varsity @ West Springfield High School

Tryouts
  • November 14, 2015, 5:30-8:30 PM, Lake Braddock Secondary School
  • November 16, 2015 (Make-up/Call-back), 8:00-9:30 PM, Kings Glen Elementary School

The players that attend our tryout can expect to participate in drills that provide opportunities for our coaches (Greg, Macara, and Phil) to evaluate each player’s passing, setting, hitting, serving, and communication skills and observe hustle and enthusiasm.

SAPT trainers will measure each player’s height and a few fitness/strength/agility indicators (e.g., vertical reach, vertical jump, maneuvering among cones).

Coaches
Greg McIntyre, Phil Oshida, and Macara Oshida - Our co- head coaches (Phil and Greg) are CAP and IMPACT certified and provide substantial individual instruction to players in addition to team teaching. Individual and team improvement will be stressed, with the expectation that improvement will result in favorable tournament results. They coached the BRYC 15's National Team last year and look forward to coaching together again. Phil and Greg have been friends for many years. Macara is an experienced volleyball coach and is Phil’s daughter. They often play volleyball together. All three coaches are of “one mind” when playing together, which makes for an effective coaching and teaching trio. Their goals are to help the girls love the game and acquire the skills to excel in volleyball.

Coach Greg - This is Greg's eighth year of coaching junior girls and his sixth consecutive year coaching a BRYC American or National team. Greg emphasizes teaching sound volleyball skills and playing smart. He enjoys seeing his players improve throughout the season and having fun as they learn new skills. He considers coaching to be a privilege. Greg started playing volleyball in college and has been playing USAV adult men’s volleyball in the Ohio Valley and Chesapeake Regions and in the US Adult Open Volleyball Championships. Greg is IMPACT and CAP I certified.

Coach Phil - This is Phil’s ninth consecutive year of coaching junior girls. Phil emphasizes doing the right thing at the right time in the right way. He considers coaching to be a privilege and a terrific opportunity to help young players learn about volleyball skills, mental preparedness, leadership, communication, supporting teammates, and loving the game. He has great fun helping his players improve during the season and seeing their joy as they master new skills. Coaching 16's is especially enjoyable because the players are enthusiastic and improve so quickly. Phil plays Senior Mens volleyball in the US Adult Open Volleyball Championships. Phil is IMPACT and CAP II certified.

Assistant Coach Macara – This is Macara’s third year of coaching junior girls. She was an assistant coach for 14’s while in high school and then took a four-year hiatus from coaching while earning Bachelors degrees from Clemson University. She played club volleyball for Metro American and BRYC and high school varsity volleyball for W.T. Woodson. She is currently an English teacher and volleyball coach at Potomac High School (Dumfries, VA). Macara has tremendous enthusiasm for playing and coaching volleyball. She enjoys facilitating the rapid improvement that teenage players demonstrate in their volleyball knowledge and physical abilities. Macara is IMPACT certified.

Practices
We expect to practice two weeknights per week and a Saturday* or Sunday*. Practices will be 1.5 to 2 hours in duration, and weeknight practices are likely to start at 7:30 and/or 8:00 PM. We will practice in the Fairfax/Springfield/Burke area (for example, last season, we practiced at Kings Glen Elementary School, Merritt Academy, and Irving Middle School). Our players are expected to participate in all practices (with exceptions for academic requirements and illness/injury).

*Saturday/Sunday practices will change days and times depending on the availability of gym space that we share with other BRYC teams. Saturday/Sunday practices may taper off after mid-February.

Expectations
  • Volleyball is a game. We want our players, coaches, and players’ families to have fun.
  • Each coach will teach effectively and enthusiastically.
  • Each player will work hard. The more our players improve, the more fun we’ll have.
  • Each player will participate in all practices.
  • Each player will participate in her two sessions per week of SAPT fitness training.
  • Barring injury, each player is expected to be available to play in all matches of our tournaments, especially the multi-day tournaments.
